LEESBURG, Fla. - Carl E. Simms, 69, of Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Davenport, died Monday, December 1, 2008, in Orlando. Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 422 East 10th Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 3 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport, with a prayer service to be held at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to either the Kidney Cancer Foundation (1234 Sherman Avenue, Suite 203, Evanston, IL 60202) or to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Simms was born in 1939, in Centerville, Iowa, to Charles and Marie Simms. He married Nancy Jo Arneson on February 14, 1980, in Davenport. Carl worked on the Scott County Posse from 1965 to 1973 when he then became a full time deputy sheriff, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant. Upon his retirement in 1998, he held the position of acting captain. He was in charge of the ASAP program at the Sheriff's office, coordinating with the traffic safety program through the governor's office in Des Moines. He was also on the S.W.A.T. team, the HazMat team, and an Accident Investigator for the sheriff's office. He was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, where he was involved with running the food pantry. His memberships also included Moose Lodge #28, Davenport, and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club of which he was a former president. He also enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes and Denver Broncos, playing golf, boating, traveling and watching sunsets on the beach.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Leesburg; daughter, Kay (Michael) Kenny of Chicago; sons, Kelly, Joel, and Christopher of Davenport, and Matthew (Theresa) of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; step-sons, Guy, Larry, and Scott Smith, all of Okla.; grandchildren, Kimberly Kenny and Mike Kenny, both of Chicago, and Mikayla Simms of Ore.; and brother, Vernon Simms of Davenport. He was preceded in death by a son, James, brothers, Marion and Gerald, and a sister, Beulah Mildren.
