Son of Col. S.P. Burns of Brown County, Texas. In the 1880 Census for Brown County he was listed as a Deputy Sheriff. By 1882, he had moved West to Grant County, NM where he was a Deputy Sheriff in Paschal, NM. Killed Aug. 1882 in Centennial Saloon.
* From the issues of The New Southwest: September 23, 1882. A simple wooden slab was placed over the grave of Burns yesterday, bearing the following legend: James D. Burns, Brownwood, Texas, age 22 years, died at Silver City, August 25, 1882.
