Poet. Her poem originally written in 1954, to fill a weekly family advice column in a Torrance California newspaper, went on to be a child-rearing anthem for parents around the world. "Children Learn What They Live," has been reprinted in 30 languages and appears on a regular bases in "Dear Abby" columns. When she discovered in 1972, companies that made baby-nutrition products were distributing millions of copies of the poem to new parents, she copyrighted the work. She continued to let companies and public publishing's use her poem, never earning a dime from the work. Her 1998 book, "Children Learn What They Live," devotes a chapter to each line of the poem. The book a world wide bestseller, has been reprinted in 19 countries and 18 languages. From: "Children Learn What They Live" If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
