Bryant Edward Burleson, 51, of China Spring, passed away unexpectedly at his home and was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, the same day as his only son's 30th birthday. A celebration of Bryant's life will be 10 a.m. Monday at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. near his childhood home at LaSalle Cemetery near Groesbeck, with the Rev. Richard Sellers, pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church in China Spring, officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Bryant was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Major (U.S. Army retired) Derwood E. "Ed" Burleson of Groesbeck and Dorothy Marie (Bush) Burleson of Corsicana. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, with a major in criminal justice in 1975. He was a licensed, Level II, private investigator and was owner/manager of Burleson Investigations since 1984.
Bryant spent the first portion of his career in criminal justice, first as a probation officer with McLennan County Juvenile Probation, and later with the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole as an adult parole officer. He also served as an investigator with the Texas Attorney General's office.
But Bryant's passion was soaring above the clouds at 25,000 feet. He received his private pilot's license and later received ATP, AMEL/CFI-I, AMSEL and A-IGI ratings. He was employed as a corporate pilot by Home State Insurance Group of Waco. Bryant loved his job as it gave him the chance to fly often to locations near and far, and he was especially fond of his bosses, John and Harriett Davis of Waco.
He even flew "just for fun" and owned his own plane. His other hobbies included hunting and gun-collecting, and he enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He loved the outdoors and animals, especially his faithful but incorrigible cocker spaniel, Scout.
Bryant was preceded in death by his daughter, Ashley; and his mother, Dorothy Marie Bush, of Corsicana.
Bryant is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Debby Burleson; son, 2nd Lt. Clint Edward Burleson, U.S. Army Aviation, and wife, Tiffany; grandchildren, Brody and Reagan Burleson and Chandler Stuberg; twin sister, Dana Renschlerl, of Waco; older sister, Casanda "Cassy" Key, of Aransas Pass and Waco; father, Major Derwood E. "Ed" Burleson (U.S. Army retired) and step-mother, Captain Susan Burleson (U.S. Army retired), of Groesbeck; and maternal aunts and uncles, numerous nieces and cousins; and his in-laws, Glen and Marcia White of Fairfield, whom he adored.
