Dr. Bowers grew up in the Lake City area and graduated from Lake City High School in 1933. He received his pre-med training at the University of Minnesota, and graduated from the university's medical school in 1938. He interned at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, in 1939. In March 1940 he married Lennacq Dell Guthrie in Kentucky. They lived in Mazeppa, MN, while he was a physician there and at Lake City hospital. She died in an auto accident in 1941.

In 1942, he joined his father's practice in Lake City, which became Bowers & Bowers Clinic. At the end of 1942 he joined the Army Medical Corps. On May 27, 1943, he married Virginia Moyer in Lake City and they lived in Muskogee, Oklahoma, until returning to Lake City after his discharge in 1947. He resumed his medical practice in Lake City and joined Dr. Gjerde in Bowers & Gjerde Clinic. Dr. Bowers served on the staff of Lake City Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Wabasha, and was a perceptor of family practice at Mayo Clinic Medical School in Rochester. Dr. Bowers retired in 1981.

He was a member and past master of Carnelion Lodge No. 10 in Lake City, a member of the Scottish Rite 33rd Degree, Shriners, and a number of other Masonic bodies. He was also a member of Eastern Star Carnelion Lodge No. 75, a 50 year member of American Legion Post 8729 in Lake City, and had received the Hiram Award. His family were hosts to numerous international students from Villa Maria Academy in Frontenac.
