He was a leading light in the Heidelberg school of painting in Melbourne, and left his mark with many works of art in the nation's galleries as well as the generations of artists he trained. He left school at 14 and tried a few odd jobs, but in 1869 he enrolled in the school of design, Carlton and at the National Gallery of Victoria. He was soon winning prizes and sold his first painting at an exhibition in 1880. He often went on painting trips with Tom Roberts in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and these morphed into the Heidelberg school when they were joined by other artists. In 1886 he was appointed drawing master at the school of design and he remained there for the rest of his life. He was a warm and gregarious man and he left Melbourne and Australia with a great heritage.
