DATA FROM DEATH CERTIFICATE
Name: Martha Clevenger
Residence: Knoxville, Tenn.
Husband: Crockett Clevenger
Birth: Not Known
Death: March 19, 1936 (age 67), Knox County, Tenn.
Informant: Walter Clevenger
Burial: Maloneyville
Undertaker: Hall & Donahue, Inc., Knoxville

Martha was born in the Wilton Springs (Lower Cosby) area of Cocke County in the mid-to-late-1860s. Her mother (father unknown) was Rosanna Smallwood. Martha had 2 brothers, Mark and Daniel. (Mark's death certificate lists John Smallwood as his father and Rosie as his mother, with the maiden name of Dims.)

Martha was in her 40s when she married Crockett Clevenger in 1909. She must have been married previously, as her name, according to Cocke County marriage records, was Martha Padgett.

In 1910 (census data), Martha and Crockett were living in Cocke County with his children/her stepchildren (children from Crockett's earlier marriage).

In 1920 (census data), Martha and Crockett were living in Knoxville with her brother, Mark Smallwood, and his 2 sons. (Mark died in 1926.)

In 1930 (census data), Crockett was living in Morristown with his daughter Rhoda Brindle, who died in 1934. Martha appears (documentation incomplete) to have been living on the Knox County "Poor Farm," where she died in 1936. She was buried on the farm in a cemetery for indigents.

[On Jan. 9, 2014, I visited this cemetery, which is located within the the county correctional facilities complex on Maloneyville Road. The standard grave marker is a small stone with on the deceased's first initial and last name only, no birth or death dates. Many are sunken stones, covered with soil and grass, and are not visible. I was unable to locate Martha's grave. (I did find a stone for a "B Clevenger.") --Gene Bryant]
