He was born in December 1877 as Klaas Tilstra in the small country village Schingen (in the Frisian language called Skingen), municipality Menaldumadeel, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, the fourth of nine children and third son of baker Rinze Tilstra and Baukje Stellngwerf.
The family Tilstra emigrated in 1887 from Schingen, northwest Friesland, Netherlands to the USA.
In 1910 Nicholas (32 y, born in the Netherlands), his father Renza Tilstra (62, Netherlands), Bessie (58, Netherlands), his siblings Samuel (31, Netherlands), David (28, Netherlands), Annie (30, Netherlands), Ella (26, Netherlands) and Jennie (25, Netherland) lived in Thornton [Township, very likely in or near South Holland, a Dutch truck farmers settlement, just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His father was one of the early gardeners of South Holland.
On 12 September 1918 the 40 years aged farmer Nick Tilstra was living with his mother, Mrs R. Tilstra at Rural Road 1 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, when he was adminisrated on a World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Card.
In 1920 Nick Tilstra (42), his mother Mrs. B Tilstra (68), his sisters Anna (39) and Ella (36) lived in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois. They immigrated in 1887.
In 1942 the 64 years aged and self-employed Nick Tilstra was living at 15908 Prairie Aven. in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, when he was administrated on a World War II Draft Registration Card.
Nick Tilstra, a retired farmer, died in May 1945 at the age of 67 years in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois.
