The Reverend Joe Wayne Brumett, 86, of Orange, died on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Born on April 16, 1927, in Carlisle Indiana, he was the son of the late Harry G. and Daisy McGinnis Brummett. Reverend Brumett was a Chaplin for the Civil Air Patrol and the Orange County Rescue Squad, a member of the Orange Lions Club and the Ruritan Club. Joe also authored two books, North of Big Spring and The Ragan Brothers. Besides being a minister he taught school in Illinois, and was a real estate appraiser when he lived in Scuffletown. Chuches he ministered during his career were the Unionville Christian Church, Union Grove Christian Church, Somerset Chistian Church, Piedmont Christian Church, and the Sourthside Christian Church in Charlottesville. He also founded the First Christian Church in Culpeper. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ann Brumett; two daughters, Leah B. Norton of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Lynne Dewitt of Montclair, Virginia; son, J. Wade Brumett and wife, Patsi, of Reva; five grandchildren, Marti Henry, Patricia Brummett, Aaron Norton, Jarrett Brumett, and Ian Norton; three great-grandchildren, Lane Smith, Aidan Henry and Gavon Henry; and one sister, Becky Phillips and husband, Richard. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 25, 2013, at the Unionville Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Reverend John Mitchell and the Reverend Michael Jackson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in his name to the Orange County Fire and EMS, P.O. Box 111, Orange, VA 22960. Preddy Funeral Home of Orange, is assisting the family.
