Derise L. Nichols, of Roanoke, VA died March 21, 2000 at age 76.


During WWII, S/Sgt. Nichols, a member of the 66th BS, was shot down over Mulhouse and spent 22 months as a POW in Stalag Lufts 1,4,6,8.


His wife Vivian, 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren survive him.


Derise Leonard Nichols, (Nick), of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2000 in the Virginia Veterans Care Center after a lengthy illness. Born October 14, 1923 in Roanoke City.


Mr. Nichols was a graduate of Jefferson High School, retired from the N & W Railway, was an Ex-POW of World War II, a life member of the VFW, POW-MIA, the American Legion and a charter member of the 200 Club.


He is survived by his wife, Vivian W. Nichols; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Thurston and husband, Ralph, Midlothian, Va.; Becky Kalinski and husband, Robert, Omaha, Nebraska; Kathy Secrist and husband, Michael, Kernersville, N.C.; granddaughters, April Kalinski, Kelsey Kalinski, both of Omaha, Nebraska, stepgrandson, Steven Secrist of Virginia, sister, Rachel Thomasson, Roanoke; one niece and two nephews; special friends, Frank and Grace Burton, Ernie and Eleanor Graham, and the staff of the Virginia Veterans Care Center.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a favorite charity. A grave side service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2000 in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. James S. Angle, with military honors by VFW Post #1264. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road.
