A pupil of Harrow, he first accquired the acting bug whilst at Oxford University. He married fellow Actor Dulcie Gray in 1939, a partership which would last for no less than 59 years, until his death in 1998. He made his screen debut that same year with an uncredited role in "Inspector Honleigh on Holiday" (1939). After serving with British Intelligence during World War Two, he began appearing in a series of Rank Films, including "Hungry Hill" (1947) and the Blind Goddess" (1948). His most framed role came as that of Algernon Moncreif in Antony Asquith's comedy of manners,"The Importance of Being Earnest" (1951). One of his final peformances was in Richard Attenborough's acclaimed C.S Lewis biopic, "Shadowlands" (1993).
