United States Army Major General. He enlisted as a private in the 4th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1861 and was breveted Captain for gallant service during the Battle of Antietam. He was serving as a Major in the 14th New York Heavy Artillery during the attack on Fort Stedman Virginia. For his part in that he was breveted Lt. Colonel, then Colonel. After the Civil War, he served in The Indian Wars and won brevets for Apache fights at Turret Peak and Diamond Butte, Arizona. In 1876 he commanded the Indian Scouts under General Crook in the Yellowstone and Big Horn Expeditions. He went on to serve during the Spanish American War and afterward was on duty in New York and Tennessee until his final duty of commanding the Department of Luzon in the Phillippines from 1903-1905. He retired on October 8, 1905.
