James R Seering, 78, of Reedsburg, died Sunday, Oct 30, 2005 at his home from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He was born on Nov 2, 1926 in Beaver Dam, ths son of Neva (Lawrence) and Alfred C Seering. On Aug 20, 1949 he married Jean Ashby, the love of his life, in a ceremony in Beaver Dam.

After graduating from Beaver Dam High School in 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later attended Central Michigan University and UW-Madison, where he earned his undergraduate degree in political science. He then attended UW Law school, earning his law degree.

He and his wife Jean moved to Reedsburg in 1951 where he opened a law practice with Paul Newcomb. In 1954 he was elected Sauk County District Attorney, serving until 1961. In the spring of 1962 he was the prosecutor in the seven-week-long murder trial of Richard Nickl, Lawrence Nutley and William J Welter, who were convicted for the shooting death of Sauk County Deputy James Jantz and the wounding of Lake Delton Police Chief Robert Kohl. The trial, held in Dane County, was one of the most publicized criminal trials in the history of Wisconsin.

In April 1962, he was elected as a Sauk County judge. He was reelected three times, retiring from the bench in 1986. As Branch 2 Judge, he heard a majority of the county's criminal and traffic cases and also heard civil cases. He also served on the Wisconsin Criminal Justice Instruction committee from 1974 through 1985.

Active in community organizations, he was a charter member of the Reedsburg Lions, and was a member of the Reedsburg Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He also served on the Reedsburg School Board during the time Webb High School was being built.

Jim loved to fish, hunt, build things in his woodworking shop and be around his friends and family. He had a gentle sense of humor he carried with him until the very end.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ann Kreier and Jane Koch.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, Daniel (fiancee Mary Jane Ripp) of Verona and Jeffrey (Mary) of Reedsburg; daughter, Jill (Nels) Swenson of Oregon; five grandchildren, Benjamin and Amy Seering and Ty, Kaylee and Statia Swenson; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many good friends.

Interment with military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Reedsburg.
