Todt joined the Nazi Party in 1923 and founded the Organization Todt, which handled construction of fortifications such as the Westwall and Atlantikwall, and the autobahn superhighways. After his death, his responsibilities passed to Albert Speer. Todt was buried with military honors in the Invaliden Cemetery in Berlin, but his grave was hidden by the Soviets after the war.
