C.J. Burnap, an aged resident of Rockford and a veteran of the civil war, passed away yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John F. Alexander, 1115 Harlem Avenue.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon from the residence. The Grand Army will have charge of the services.
Mr. Burnap was born at Brandon, Vt., June 8, 1825, and was married at Lowell, Mass., to Miss Mary M. Jones in 1846. They removed to Boston in 1871 and after remaining there for two years returned to the west, making their home in Rockford.
Decedent was a veteran, enlisting in Co. D of the Fifty-fifth Illinois volunteers. His leg was crushed while serving on a gunboat at Paducah, Ky., and he was discharged from the service. The injury remained a handicap through his life.
He was an expert cabinet maker and on first coming to Rockford established a shop at his home in Ferguson street where he worked until he assisted in starting one of the first furniture factories in the city on the water power. Of recent years he had conducted a nursery in N Court st. His wife passed away several years ago and Mrs. Alexander is the only child.
