| Birth: | Dec. 3, 1684 | | Death: | Jan. 28, 1754 |  Writer, historian and playwright, born in Bergen, Norway, and educated at the universities of Copenhagen and Oxford. He was an outstanding figure of the Enlightenment and is called the father of Danish Literature. From 1714 to 1735 he was a professor at the University of Copenhagen in philosophy, metaphysics, Latin poetry and rhetoric, and history, and from 1735 to 1751 he was first the vice-chancellor and later the bursar of the university. He wrote a vast body of poetic and historical works. During 1722 and 1723 he wrote his 15 most famous comedies which are still performed on the Danish stage and in the other Nordic countries. In total he wrote 33 comedies inspired by Plautus, Moliere and the Italian commedia dell'arte. In 1747 he was made Baron Holberg. (bio by: Erik Skytte)
