Second Lieutenant Bergeur was assigned to the
393rd Combat Crew Training School at Sioux
City Army Air Base, Iowa.

He was one of nine airmen killed when B-17F
Flying Fortress #42-6013 experienced
engine troubles and clipped some trees and
flipped over, crashing into a cornfield and
bursting into flames, near Holly Springs,
Iowa. There were no survivors.

The other eight airmen who perished were:

2nd Lt. Gordon G Groos co-pilot
2nd Lt. William G Campbell, Jr
Flt. Off. Thomas E Lefoldt
2nd Lt. Thomas A Liebich
Sgt. Lester L Hatcher
Sgt. Morton J Levy
Sgt. Fred W Murphy
