Ruth Alice Santelman-Hoffert was born 6 Apr 1904 in Frontenac, Goodhue Co., MN to August Rudolph Santelman and Mary Wilhamena J. Steffenhagen. She was the eldest of 3 daughters. Ruth was a graduate of Hamline University, where she met her husband of 56 years. Dr. Henry E. Hoffert. She taught at West High School before raising to daughters, Mary Jo and Emily. Ruth was a resident of Edina, MN for over 50 years, where her Wooddale home in the Country Club Section was her pride and joy.
She was a long time member of the Minneapolis Womens Club, the Minikahda Club and the Hennepin Ave. Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer and bridge player. Ruth, at age 94, and her sister Hazel Stauffer, age 90, attended the Santelman Family Reunion in Red Wing, MN in the summer of 1999. Hazels son, Bill, who is a Dr. (anesthitist) in Minneapolis, brought them over from Friendship Village in Bloomington, where the two ladies lived.
Ruths husband, Dr. Henry E. Hoffert Jr. died July 1983 in Edina, MN. He had contacted tuberculosis and had been in a Sanitarium for quite some time.
Ruth died 7 Mar 2003 in Bloomington, MN, just a month shy of her 99th Birthday.
Ruth was survived by her daughter and son in law, Mary Jo and Bruce Byson of Walnut Creek, CA, (both are teachers in CA); her twin sisters, Helen K. Meyer of Indianapolis, IN and Hazel E. Stauffer of Bloomington, MN (formerly of Allentown, PA).
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; and her daughter Emily Ann Hoffert, who died 28 Aug 1963. Emily was murdered in Manhattan, New York. She had just graduated from a womans college and had lived in the school dorm. She was packing to leave for a teaching job on Long Island when she was attacked and stabbed. A suspect was apprehended in the case but they were not sure he was the right man. She was only 27.
Ruth was buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis beside her husband and daughter.
