James "J.W." or "J Bird" W. Penton, 76, died Dec. 27 at Valley Manor Nursing Home, Concord after a brief illness. Born in Bernice, La., Mr. Penton was a resident of Vallejo.

Mr. Penton was a self-employed cement mason for 40 years before retiring in 1985. He enjoyed fishing and reading.

Survivors include his daughters, Joan Smith of Dallas, Texas and Avis Brown of Vallejo; son, Dean of Richmond; sister, Lucina Phillips of Bernice, La.; brother, Elder Charles Thurmon of Vallejo; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home, Vallejo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shilo Church of God in Christ, 501 Lemon St., Vallejo, with Elder Willie Ernest, Pastor officiating. Burial will be at Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo..
