Savely Kramarov
Birth: Oct. 13, 1934
Moscow Federal City, Russia
Death: Jun. 6, 1995
San Francisco
San Francisco County
California, USA

Actor, Entertainer. A comedy superstar in the Soviet Union, Kramarov gave up his brilliant movie career and immigrated to the United States for religious freedom in 1982. A graduate of the Soviet film school, he appeared in 42 Russian films, usually portraying the goofy cross-eyed stupid slack-jawed everyday Joe. His popularity in the former Soviet Union peaked in the 1960s and 1970s, including Trembila (1968), Twelve Chairs (1970), Gentleman of Fortune (1972), Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession (1973), and the long-running TV miniseries Long Recess (1976). After arrival in the United States, he underwent surgery to repair his cross eyes, and lived in Los Angeles for ten years while appearing in smaller roles in Hollywood movies. These included: a KGB hot dog vendor in Moscow on the Hudson (1984), a Russian Cosmonaut in 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984), Armed and Dangerous (1986), Red Heat (1988)and Tango and Cash (1989). he made his final screen appearance as a Russian seaman in Love Affair (1994). Kramarov remarried late to a Russian woman who was a fan-more than 20 years his junior-and lived in the San Francisco Bay area the last three years of his life, purchasing a house in a wooded area of Forest Knoll. Kramarov's entry into Find-a-Grave is unique because his tombstone is one of a kind among Hollywood's acting elite. His gravestone at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park in Colma features casts of the actor's comedy masks, scripts, make-up brushes and a framed photograph of Russia's comedy prince. Though he became persona-non-grata in the Soviet Union and saw his name and films banned as a 'traitor', with the advent of Perestroika, Kramarov's films reappeared on Soviet TV and by the time of his death in 1995, he was experiencing a resurgence and became revered in his native Russia again. (bio by: Robert)
