Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in England, he was a long time resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Topographical Engineers on July 7, 1838. He was promoted 1st Lieutenant on May 31, 1848, Captain on March 3, 1863, and Major on September 9, 1861. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Regular Army on October 20, 1861, and Colonel, US Regular Army on May 5, 1862 for "gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Williamsburg, Va." He died of typhoid fever in June 1862 in Washington, DC. During the time of Spring 1862 he served as an aide on the staff of Major General George B. McClellan.
