John Fletcher Barton - John was born July 4, 1842 in Delaware County, IN. He was the son of William and Louisa Benjamin Barton. John was a Civil War Veteran, serving in Co. E, 75th Indiana Regt. He was wounded in the Battle of Chattanooga in Chattanooga, TN. After being hospitalized in a military hospital, he was discharged to return home.

On Aug. 20 1865, he married Mary Jane Mossburg from Wells County, daughter of James Tolliver Mossburg and Isabella Mounsey. Mary Jane was born on Sept. 20, 1846 in Liberty Center, Wells County, IN. They were members of the Methodist Church in Lancaster, IN. Together they had seven children: John Lewis, James, Ella, cora, Mae, Lulu and Charles. John had four brothers who also served in the Civil War. When they returned all went West but John Fletcher.

John Fletcher Barton's Wells County History still remains a mystery. On March 14, 1922, John died of paralysis. Mary Jane lived until Sept. 18, 1928. Both rest in the Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County, IN.

Civil War Veteran Dead At Huntington

John F. Barton, 79, Dead At Home In Lancaster-Funeral Friday

Huntington, Ind., March 16.-Funeral services for John F. Barton, seventy nine years old who died Tuesday night at his home in Lancaster will be conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning at the Church of the Brethren in Lancaster. Burial will be in the Lancaster cemetery.

Mr. Barton was born in Delaware county, Ind., July 4, 1842 to William and Louisa Barton. His marriage to Miss Mary Jane Mossburg took place July 20, 1865. Eight children were born to them, one of whom, Howard Barton, is deceased.

Surviving are the widow, four daughters, Mrs. Ella Bowen of Gary; Mrs. Cora Rayl of Terre Haute; Mrs. May Malott, of Muncie and Mrs. Lulu Shideler of Logansport and three sons, James Barton of Muncie; Charles Barton, of Blackford county, Ind.; and J. L. Barton, of Lancaster township. Twenty-three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also are living.

Mr. Barton was a veteran of the Civil War, having served as a private in Company E of the 75th Indiana volunteer infantry. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and had lived in Lancaster twenty-one years. He had been ill four years and his condition was critical since last Friday when he was stricken with paralysis.
