Mrs. Wylodine Malinda Duncan Alexander, age 100, departed this life to be present with the Lord on Friday morning, November 6, 1998, at the Pavilion of Waukegan Nursing Home.
She was born September 28, 1898 in Florence, Alabama, the second of four children born to Richmond and Mary Francis "Frankie" Lovelace Duncan.
The Duncan Family migrated North, arriving in North Chicago, Illinois on April 12, 1921, where Mrs. Alexander resided until she entered the nursing home in 1995. In 1925, she married Ed Alexander, who preceded her in death in 1957.
A committed Christian, Mrs. Alexander received Jesus as her Lord and Savior on September 19, 1913, and united with Armstead Chapel C.M.E. Church in Florence. In 1923, she united with Trinity A.M.E. Church in Waukegan, Illinois where, over the years, she served as a choir director (for about 35 years), a church trustee and Sunday School teacher. In 1972, she became a charter member of Eternal Flame A.M.E. Church in North Chicago, where she organized and directed the choir, taught Bible Class and Sunday School, and was a church trustee. An avid student of Scripture, she occasionally led Bible studies in her home with friends and family. She loved Christian music, gardening and fishing.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Minnie Gray; and two brothers, Fancie and Barney Duncan.
A visitation and funeral service were held on Tuesday, November 10, 1998 at Eternal Flame African Methodist Episcopal Church in North Chicago, officiated by the pastor, Rev. Reginald Blount. The eulogy was delivered by Rev. Wyeth W. Duncan, Mrs. Alexander's great-great nephew. Following the service, her remains were interred in Pine View Memorial Park, Beach Park, Illinois.
