Roman Catholic Cardinal. Receiving his education under the Jesuit Fathers at St. Joseph's College in Valencia, he was ordained priest in 1951. He attained his degree in Canon Law in 1953 and went on to serve at various capacities, among them rector of the parish of San Fernando in his native Valencia. Named Bishop of Tortosa 1969, he was appointed Archbishop of Barcelona 1990 and four years later created Cardinal by Pope John Paul II with the title of Santa Maria Consolatrice al Tiburtino. Retiring from office in 2004, his accomplishments during his episcopate in Barcelona include the creation of presbyterial and pastoral diocesan councils and the reorganization of the vast Archdiocese into four episcopal zones entrusted to the five auxiliary bishops.
