A player of reliability and durability, he was also one of the Cubs best players in the postseason, hitting .348 in four World Series. Stan was a popular player with both the fans and his teammates. He was an ebullient man who seemed to enjoy his work. Writers dubbed him "Smiling Stan." He led the league in putouts five times, twice in fielding percentage and twice in assists. In 1942 he went 54 games without committing an error at third base, which was a record at that time. On offense, Stan twice let the league in stolen bases in '38 and '39, and twice he led the league in hits in 1940 and 1941. He scored 100 or more runs seven times, including six consecutive times form 1936 to 1941. In the 1935 World Series, he had five hits, including a double and triple. In the 1938 Series, he let all players with a .471 batting average and eight hits. He smacked 11 hits in the 1945 World Series. After his reitrement in 1947 he managed the Cubs from 1954 to 1956 compiling a 196-265 record. He also coached and managed the Cardinals in the closing weeks of the 1958 season and had a record of 3-7. In his final years he managed the Landmark Restruant in Grand Junction, IL.
