In 1910 John (3 y, born in Illinois), his father Bert Zandstra (41, Holland), his mother Kathy (34, Holland), his siblings Gettie (15, Illinois), Nicholas (13, Illinois), Hilda (10, Illinois), Johannes (9, Illinois), Jacob (5, Illinois), Bert (4, Illinois) and Arnold (11 months, Illinois) lived in Thornton [Township], just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
About 1911 the family Zandstra moved for some years to Colorado and then, about 1914 to Highland, Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana, adjacent to Chicago, Cook County in Illinois and Michigan Lake.
In 1920 John (13) lived still in North Township, Lake County, Indiana, together with his father Bert Zandstra, his mother Catherin (44) and his 12 siblings: Gertrude (24), Hilda (20), Joe (18), Charlie (17), Jacob (15), Bert (14), Arnold (10), Elizabeth (8, born in Colorado), William (7, Colorado), Garret (5, Indiana), Jeanett (4, Indiana) and Catherien (0, Indiana).
In 1930 John (23), his parents Bart Zandstra (62) and Katerine (55), his siblings Joe (29), Jacob (25), Bart (24), Arnold (20), Elizebeth (19), William (17), Gerrit (16), Jeanette (14) and Catherine (10) lived in Highland, North Township, Lake County, Indiana.
John Zandstra, residing at Dyer, a town in St. John Township, Lake County, Indiana, married on 26 January 1931 in Elkhart County on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, in the utter northern part of Indiana to the one year younger Della Willvinia Totten, born on 25 March 1907 in Sand Lake, Michigan, daughter of Leon Totten and Mabel Lockerby.
In May 1940 John B Zandstra (33, Illinois, driver on a retail milk truck), his wife Della (33, Michigan), their children Burdette [H] (8, Indiana), John Paul (5, Indiana) and Jerry Allen (0, Indiana) lived at an own home, worth $6500, in Highland Town, North Township, Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana. They lived in 1935 at the same place. A possible daughter of John is also Jacquelyn G Zandstra.
John B Zandstra lived from at least November 1993 until his death in 2006 in Big Rapids, seat of Mecosta County, central Michigan. He had in October 2006 also an address in
Highland Bra, Indiana.
His wife Della W. Zandstra died on 22 February 2000 in Big Rapids, seat of Mecosta County, central Michigan at the age of 92 years. John B. Zandstra died on 18 February 2006 in Big Rapids too, at the age of 99 years.
They were both buried in Porter [County], east of Lake County, in the northwestern part of Indiana.
ZANDSTRA (Big Rapids) - After 99 years of dispensing grace and showing by his example what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, John B. Zandstra of Big Rapids went to see his Lord face to face on Saturday, February 18, 2006. John is survived by his children, Burdette (Eileen) Zandstra of Highland, IN, John (Barbara) Zandstra of Highland, IN, Jerry (Jacque) Zandstra of Kuwait City, Kuwait, Elaine (John) Ooms of Grand Rapids, and Eunice (George) Mossel of Grand Rapids; 19 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Dick (Betty) Zandstra of Highland, IN; a brother-in-law, Bill Totten of Rodney; and numerous nieces and nephews. John's wife, Delphine, preceded him in death in 2000. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at the Fellowship Christian Reformed Church in Big Rapids with Rev. Russ Ooms and Rev. Ed Visser officiating. Burial will be in the South Grant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for the John and Della Zandstra Mission Scholarship at Calvin Seminary may be left at the church where John's family will greet friends tomorrow (Tuesday), February 21, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m. and prior to the service on Wednesday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
