Birth: 1819
Woodbury
Bedford County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Dec. 3, 1897
Webster City
Hamilton County
Iowa, USA

Note: David was the sixth of twelve children born to Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine: Michael, Jacob, Margaret, Charles, Catherine, David "Doc", George, Mary, John, Abraham, Samuel, and Syphronia. Only the last child has not been traced.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/ Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

THE LAST OF EARTH
The funeral of David Cantonwine, who died on the 3rd. inst., was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence of his oldest son, W. C. [Walter Charles] Cantonwine—on West Second St. The old gentleman was seventy-nine years old, and his death was a result of the infirmities of old age. He was the father of six sons and two daughters [eight sons and three daughters by two marriages], all of whom survive him. Three of the sons reside in Webster City. His wife, from whom he was separated for some time, also resides there. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. A. E. Cory of Boone, and quite a number of the family were present at the services.
