William Manning was born in Bratton Fleming, County Devon, England. He came to America at the age of twenty, and our first records indicate that in 1858 he lived in Oakfield, NY northwest of Batavia. On August 12, 1862, William served his first circuit as a Free Methodist minister at Rushford, NY, and married Lemira Francine Warner.
Reverend Manning was a minister of the gospel of Christ over sixty years, being an active itinerant minister of the Gospel with the Free Methodist Church for 45 years (1861 to 1906) on 25 circuits for some 35 congregations. Lemira was also an active member of the Genesee Conference and supported William in their life work.
They lived most of their lives in western New York State, until 1918 when they moved to California, residing with their daughter, Mrs. Harriet S. McCoy of Berkeley. Lemira passed away on January 30, 1921 at the age of 78. In June 1921, William fell and suffered a broken hip, and, after much suffering, died July 24, 1921 at the age of 88.
