Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Bessie" Wilkinson Davidson. She immigrated from England and arrived in Philadelphia on May 17, 1858 with her parents and older half-siblings. She married Joseph Gardner in 1865 in Meigs County, Ohio, where they raised their nine children and remained until their deaths.
