Frederick J. "Fred" Wittlinger Sr., 92, of Blair, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Carter House in Blair.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, at Campbell Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Memorials may be directed to Gentiva Hospice in his memory.

Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 11, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Blair, with Celebrant Father Mario Rapose officiating. Lynn and Steve Sobota sang musical selections, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "On Eagles Wings" and "Be Not Afraid". Pallbearers were Ernie Brenneis, Mike Comstock, Mark Gutschow, Don Kuhr and Steve Rounds. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery, Blair, Nebraska, with full military honors.

Frederick Joseph Wittlinger was born November 10, 1921, in New York City, New York, the son of Frederick and Anna (Cannon) Wittlinger. He received his education at St Anne's Academy and Manhattan College, New York City, The University of Maryland, Texas A & M, and Command and General Staff College.

He proudly joined the U.S. Army in 1939 and served in the Army Corp of Engineers as a Private and rose to the rank of Lt. Col., in 1963. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the European Theatre and Battle of the Bulge during World War II, the Korean War from 1950 to 1951, and the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1966, and retired from military service in 1968. His military decorations include two Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and numerous campaign medals.

He met 2nd Lt. Inez Joy Rounds, an Army Nurse serving in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps on May 8, 1945, Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II. They were married on June 13, 1945, in Sissonne, France. They adopted two daughters, Joyce and Janet in 1952, at Fort Belvior Army Base, Virginia. The family travelled extensively during his military career, until he retirement in 1968, and the family settled in Blair. He was also employed with Gibbs & Hill Inc., Engineers from 1961 to 1981, including Project Engineer of the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant. Inez preceded him in death on March 25, 2001. He was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, golf, reading, cars, yard work, entertaining and Husker football. Above all, he loved the time he spent with his family.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce (Jerry) Robbins of Grand Junction, CO, and Janet (Chuck) Caul of Blair, NE; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Brendan (Joni) Wittlinger of Alexandria, VA; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Wittlinger of Kansas City, KS, and one brother-in-law, Emil Falla of Cedar Grove, NJ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, an infant son, Frederick Wittlinger Jr., one sister, Virginia Falla, three brothers, Donald, Raymond and Bernard Wittlinger and one nephew, Frederick Wittlinger.
