US Congressman. He moved to Chariton County, Missouri, in 1873, was a teacher in the district schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced to practice law in Keytesville, Missouri. He was prosecuting attorney of Chariton County, (1886-92) and judge of the twelfth circuit, (1892-99). In 1899, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1923. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in agricultural pursuits, until his death at age 81.
