George Conner Thomas Jr. died March 14, 2009.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Dresden First United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors was at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Bowlin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Dresden, the son of the late George C. and Georgia Shannon Thomas.

During World War II, he served as an officer in the Army's 112th Cavalry regiment that was deployed to the Pacific front, where his unit made several landings, including the Philippines. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his bravery in combat. He mustered out of the Army as a major and enlisted in the National Guard, where he served an additional 25 years, retiring as lieutenant colonel. After the war, he finished his degree at the University of Tennessee and entered law school at UT, where he graduated first in his class. He was elected and served as Weakley County judge from 1950-58. He then built a law practice that eventually included David Welles and his two sons, George C. Thomas III and Tommy Thomas, as partners. He also served as field representative for Congressmen Robert "Fats" Everett and Ed Jones for more than 25 years. He married Mary Sue Irvine in 1946 and after her death in 1985, he married Julia Lovell. He was a member of Dresden First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Julia; two sons, Tommy (Paula) Thomas of Dresden and George (Gretchen) Thomas III of Warren, N.J.; a grandson Matthew Thomas; stepchildren, Sherry Motley and Greg (Janet) Smith; step grandchildren, Jinny (Scott) Killebrew, Molly Martin, Katelyn and Kevin Smith; step great grandchildren Callen Killebrew, Caroline Killebrew and Lauren Martin.; four sisters-in-law, Edna Algea, Billie O'Neal, Maxine (Gerald) Wallis and Elnora (Reau) Graves; and a brother-in-law, Terry (Doris) Lovell.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Shannon Thomas.

The family requests memorials be made to Dresden First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 105 S. Church St., Dresden, TN 38225.
