On September 16, 1861, George mustered in as a Corporal in Company A, 5th Regiment Vermont volunteers. He was later promoted to Sargent. George transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps on March 15, 1864, and mustered out September 15, 1864.
The obituary published in the Orleans County Monitor (Barton, Vermont) on May 10, 1916 states George was living in Barton with his daughter, Mrs. Warren Crafts, at the time of his death. The death notice published in The St Johnsbury Caledonian (St. Johnsbury, Vermont) the same day states Mrs. Warren Crafts was George's step-daughter.
