Sgt. Charles Neeson husband of Mary Anne Ferguson (married February 02 1913) and father of Julia Neeson (22 August 1914- October 1988).
Son of John Neeson and Elizabeth Burns of Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
Brother of Patrick, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, John Laurence, Cornelius, Bernard, Mary Ann and William James.
At the time of their marriage Chas and Mary lived at 122 Great Georges Street, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
At the time of death address is listed as 12 McCleery Street, Belfast which is where the Ferguson family lived.
Charles enlisted #2550 in the Connaught Rangers which was later disbanded and he then became #48698 in the Royal Inniskillen Fusiliers Regiment.
He served in the Balkans prior to being shipped off to France and then into Belgium where he was killed in action.
Charles headed off to war with his two brothers Patrick and John. His father also John was a Pte. during WW1.
John would become the youngest Sgt. Major in the British Army. He was too young to enlist and used his older brothers birth certificate. (Also called John who died in infancy). He would later go on to fight with lawrence of Arabia.
Chas's unit was under heavy artillery on the evening of October 11 1918 when the hut they were operating out of was struck and put them into complete darkness. Chas volunteered to try to get the lights back on and it was then they were struck by a mortar with Chas taking the full brunt of the blast. He was killed in action one month before peace was declared in what we now call Rembrance Day...Nov 11th each year.
Patrick and John returned from the war. Patrick working many years as a baker in McWaters Bakery in Belfast and John in the Bus Depot on the Glen Road, Belfast.
Charlie received a Large copper penny medallion engraved with his name on it. It was given to all who died during the war and was termed The Dead Man's Penny or the "Death Penny".
