John O. Nelson was born on February 1, 1875 in Lawrence County, Indiana: he was the son of John H. and Sarah A. Nelson. He was a laborer.

He enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army in April , 1917 in Terre Haute, Indiana and was sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He was assigned to Company B, 4th Infantry and was deployed overseas in May, 1918. He was killed in action July 23, 1918.

He was survived by his former wife Ida (Brown)Nelson Wheeler and three children, John S., Gladys, and Daisy of Ft. Ritner, Indiana. One son, Raymond, is deceased.
