Senator and former head of the foreign relations committee. Responsible for the legislation that returned the Panama Canal. Democratic Presidential candidate in 1976 against Jimmy Carter. Buried close to his boyhood hero, Sen. William Borah. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1957 at the age of 32, he was one of the youngest ever to take a seat in the U.S. Senate. First and only office he was ever elected to, he served 4 terms in a Republican State that had never re-elected a Democrat. 'The River of No Return Wilderness Area' was renamed 'The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area' in honor of his tireless effort fighting for the protection of our environment.
