The Duncan Banner, Jan. _, 1996
Longtime Duncan resident DR. GERALD LeROY BEASLEY, JR., 69, 1005 Cedar, passed away Thursday, 4 Jan 1996, at home.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mickey Hollars officiating. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery, under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Dr. Beasley was born on 6 April 1926 in Tulsa to Gerald L. Beasley and Lottie Laura (Bell) Beasley. He attended Tulsa public schools, accelerating his studies in order to enlist in the Air Corps when he reached 18 years of age, where he served until after the end of World War II.
After returning home to more accelerated studies, he graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1949. On 2 Sept 1949 he married Mary Evelyn Burke in Tulsa, and they moved to Oklahoma City where he attended OU School of Medicine, graduating in 1953. After an internship at Veterans' Hospital in Oklahoma City, he opened a medical office where he practiced for six years, serving on several hospital staffs.
In June 1961 he moved to Duncan with his family and practiced medicine here until his retirement in August 1991. As his health permitted, he served as an emergency room physician until December 1994.
He was one of the rare individuals who was fortunate enough to spend his life in a profession he truly enjoyed. He built close relationships with his patients and considered these friendships some of life's true treasures. He shared with his family the sports he loved: boating, water and snow skiing, figure skating, swimming, diving, bicycling and flying. He loved flying, eventually building an experimental model airplane. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, the Stephens County Medical Society, the Duncan Regional Hospital medical staff, and served on the board of directors of Hospice.
As a lifetime member of the John Birch Society and life-long conservative and Republican, he remained active in politics throughout his life, working to see our nation return to the Constitution and Christian principles upon which it was founded.
He considered himself to be a sinner, saved only by the blood of Jesus. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother; wife; daughter, Betty; sons Gerald, Don and Robert; and nine grandchildren, all of whom were his joy and delight. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Linda Kay.
Bearers will be Dennis Johnson, Richard Sutterfield, Steve Fair, Jimmy Edwards, Don Bour and Doug Pewitt. Honorary bearers will be J.L. Woolsey, Dale Anderson, Elzia Nunley, Dr. Dan Criswell, Tom King, Les Agee and Jim Underwood.
