Juan was the husband of Alicia Valtierra of Merced CA, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gumercindo Valtierra also of Merced CA. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 11, 1963 in San Francisco CA.
In Vietnam, LCpl Valtierra was assigned to and serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 3d MARDIV (FMF.
A five day operation, code named LONG LANCE was initiated by the Battalion in the western portion of the unit's area of responsibility in Quang Nam Province. On the fourth day, Company D was on a sweep northeast of Hill 52 in the vicinity of the hamlet of Loc Phuoc (1) in the Dai Loc District and as the 2d platoon crossed a rice paddy the Marines were hit with machine gun and automatic weapons fire. Air strikes and mortar fire was directed at the enemy positions causing the enemy fire to slacken and enable to Marines to move forward on the attack. By dusk the fire fights ceased, casualties were gathered and evacuated, two Marines had been killed in the action and several were wounded. LCpl Valtierra was one of the casualties; he had been killed by hostile rifle fire.
