Gladys Belle Hershberger Karlburg, 95, a longtime Lewiston resident, died Tuesday at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise from complications of surgery for a broken hip.

Before her marriage to Herbert E. Karlburg in June 1931 at Lewiston, she was known for her music, which included both live and radio performances. She taught both voice and piano.

Later she helped establish the Community Concerts series in Lewiston.

She was also a board member of the YWCA and a charter member of the Lewiston Welfare League, now known as the Lewiston Service League.

She was born Jan. 16, 1903, to Charles E. and Cynthia B. Hershberger in Ritzville, Wash. The family moved to Lewiston in 1909 and she graduated from high school in 1921.

She attended the University of Washington, Lewiston Normal School (now Lewis-Clark State College) and the Cornish School of Music at Seattle.

Her memberships included the Tsceminicum Club, River Garden Club, Daughters of the Nile, Order of Eastern Star and the Chancel Guide of the Episcopal Church.

She never lost her sense of humor, nor her love of the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. She appreciated beauty, from the flowers in her garden to dogwood trees and antiques.

After she chose not to sing in public any longer, she enjoyed singing for friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Jordan of Council, Idaho; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Emily (Hershberger) Johnson and Meeka (Hershberger) Vodila.
