William Henry Peck Steere

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the rebellion, he enlisted in Rhode Island Volunteers was commissioned Captain and promoted Colonel in command of the 4th Regiment in October 1861. Selected for the North Carolina Campaign, under General Burnside, the 4th Rhode Island with the 5th Rhode Island, the 8th and 11th Connecticut, constituted the 3rd Brigade of the Coast Division in January 1862. He led the 4th Rhode Island at the Battle of Bull Run and in the Battle of South Mountain, fought September 14, 1862. Marching the 4th Rhode Island into Maryland, he engaged his regiment with a valor second to no other on the field in the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862, was severely wounded but continued to lead on his men until fainting from loss of blood. After removing from his wound, he returned to his command in June 1863 and from July 15, 1863, to March 1, 1864, he led the 4th Rhode Island Infantry Regiment in actions through Viginia. After the Siege of Petersburg, he served as a staff officer in Washington D.C. and mustered out October 15, 1864, when the 4th was consolidated with 7th Rhode Island Infantry. For courageous leadership at the Battle of Antietam, he was bevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
