Painter, entrepreneur, friend of Goethe and the first director of the 'Fürstliche Freie Zeichenschule' in Weimar, founded in 1776 by the Duke Carl August. He accompanied Goethe often on his travels e. g. the third Harz journey to record whose geological studies. Kraus died from the consequences of the dispoilment of Weimar by Napoleons soldiers after the battle of Jena and Auerstaedt.
