Catharinus de Haan [= the Cock, the Rooster] was born in January 1873 in the country village of Bovenknijpe, located just east of the town of Heerenveen, located in the midsouthern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of Abele Arends de Haan (39 years old, shop keeper) and Pieterke de Jonge.

On April 19, 1893 he emigrated on board the ship Vaderland from Antwerp, Belgium to the USA.

On November 2, 1896 Catrines A. Dehaan married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 23 years the four years younger Gerlofke E. Rypkema.

On October 8, 1898 he was naturalized by a County Court in Chicago and became an American citizen.

In June 1900 Tevis De Haan (26 years old, born in February 1874 in Holland, immigrated in 1892, saloon keeper), his wife Alice De Haan (23, August 1877, Holland, immigrated in 1893, mother of 2 living children), her husband ), their daughters Maggie De Haan (3, May 1897, Illinois) and Nellie De Haan (1, April 1899, Illinois), his father-in-law Albert Rypkerua (60, February 1840, Holland, immigrated in 1893, widower, day laborer) and his brother-in-law Charles Rypkerua (14, July 1893, Holland, immigrated in 1893) were living in a rented house at 9421 Burnside Avenue in Hyde Park Township, Ward 34 of -south- Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On February 26, 1910 the 37 years old merchant Catrines De Haan applied in Cook County, Illinois for himself, his wife Alice and their daughter for a passport because he was about to go abroad for less than 4 months. He solemny sweared that he:
