William Harvey
Birth: Apr. 1, 1578
Death: Jun. 3, 1657

Physician. He discovered the function of the heart in the circulation of the blood. After graduating from the University of Padua in 1602 he returned to London where he became the physician for the royals, and a lecturer for the College of Physicians. It was in his lectures that he first posed the concept of the circulation of the blood. He proposed, among other things, that the blood in the veins and the arteries were the same blood, and that the dynamical starting point of the blood was the heart not the liver as commonly held at that time. He was also a pioneer in the study of embryology. In 1651 his results were published in "On the Movement of the Heart and Blood in Animals." (bio by: Bigwoo)
