John A. Ross, 80, a lifelong resident of Kansas City, MO, passed away December 7, 2004, at the St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Chapel, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO. Family will receive friends one hour before the service, and after the service there will be a luncheon held at the Woodbridge Estates Clubhouse, 300 Woodbridge Lane, Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the St. John's United Methodist Church, 6900 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO, 64113, or to Wayside Waifs, Kansas City's Humane Society, PO Box 9791, Kansas City, MO, 64134-0791.

John was born October 1, 1924, the only son of Arthur L. and Lydia Lindquist Ross.

He graduated from Southwest High School in 1941, and in 1949, earned both a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and his certification as a Public Accountant from the State of Missouri. He and his father were partners for nearly 20 years in the law firm of Ross and Ross, specializing in Corporate Tax Law. John twice was qualified and admitted as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States. Later in life, following his love of automobiles, he became the owner and General Manager of Stadium PorscheAudi and Stadium Honda automobile dealerships.

During WWII, John was a combat veteran of the African and Italian campaigns. He was a member of the famed American/Canadian Paratroop Commando unit, the "Black Devils Brigade," a unique and elite First Special Service Force. In 1968, John appeared on both the Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin TV shows as a result of authoring a book entitled "How To Be Happily Divorced," a light-hearted, humorous guide for the recently divorced man of that era. He was a 50-year plus member of the following organizations: The Missouri Bar Association, St. John's United Methodist Church, The American Legion-Sanford Brown Post #124, The Masonic Ivanhoe Lodge #446, The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and The Ararat Shrine. John was also a founding member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Kansas City Region, and at one time served the organization as Regional Executive.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Vallera Clough Ross, of the home; daughter Barbara Jane Thummel and husband Elmer, of Raytown, MO; grandson Kevin Enyart, of Olathe, KS, and granddaughter Kelli Enyart, of Kansas City, MO; plus three greatgrandchildren.

His cremains will be interred at a later date in the Ross family plot of the Spring River Cemetery, Verona, MO. (Arr. Mt. Moriah & Freeman Chapel, 816-9422004)

FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE WWII

Son of Arthur L and Lydia (Lindquist) Ross, lifelong Kansas City resident and graduate of Southwest high school.

Enlisted in the army and served with the First Special Service Force during WWII. After military service attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City graduating in 1949 with a Juris Doctorate degree and also received his certification as a Public Accountant from the state of Missouri.

Raymond was a partner at the Ross and Ross law firm with his father, the company specialized in corporate tax law. John Ross twice was qualified and admitted as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States. Survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law, a grandson and granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force, in recognition of its superior service during World War II.
