Joseph was the 6th of nine children born to John Allen I* and Amy Cox. His siblings: John II, Rebecca, Emey, Elizabeth, William, Mary, Phebe and Benjamin.

Regarding their intention to marry and their marriage process, references to them were found in several records: Monthly Meeting Minutes and Women's Meeting Minutes as well as Marriage Records.

As per the Friends process, Joseph and Deborah first appeared and stated their intention to marry at New Garden Monthly Meeting on 27 day, 9 mo 1755 (27 Sep 1755): "Joseph Allen Son of John Allen and Deborah Hill — Daughter of Samuel Hill appeared at this Meeting & signified their Intentions of Marriage with each other it being the first time therefore this Meeting Appoints Moses Pyle & Samuel Swayne to Enquire Concerning him & make Report to the next monthly Meeting." in another Friends record (the Women's Minutes) of the same date: "...we Appoint Margaret Carpenter and Martha Hobson to Enquire into her __ (unreadable but prob. "clearness" or "cleanness") from all others in Relation to her Marriage & make Report to next Meeting."*

Joseph and Deborah appear at the next MM (25th day, 10th mo, 1755 / 25 Oct 1755) stating their second intention to marry: "Joseph Allen & Deborah Hill Appeared the Second time & Signified they Continued their Intentions of Marriage with each other & nothing Appearing to Obstruct their said Intentions this meeting leaves them to their liberty to accomplish their marriage orderly & Appoints Joseph Dixon & Thomas Bryan to Attend the Marriage and make report to next monthly Meeting & ring the Marriage Certificate to be Recorded." And in the Women's Minutes: "

In the Marriage Record 13th day, 11 mo 1755 (13 Nov 1755) reads in part: "Joseph Allen taking the said Deborah Hill by the hand did in Sollemn manner did openly declare that he took her the said Deborah Hill to be his Wife promising with the Lords assistance to be unto her a loving & faithfull Husband until death should separate them. & then & there in the said assembly the said Deborah Hill did like manner declare that she took him the said Joseph All two be her Husband promising with the Loords assistance to be unto him a Love and faithful Wife until death should separate them or words to the same Effect." Signed by 33 witnesses, some of them his family.

It was recorded on 29th day, 11th mo 1755 (27 Nov 1755) at New Garden MM: "The Friends Appointed gives Account that the said Marriage ofJoseph Allen & Deborah Hill was orderly accomplished & have brought the said Marriage Certificate"

Joseph and Deborah had 9 children: John, Eli, Samuel, Ann, Emey, William, Deborah, Joshua, and Benjamin. Church records (4th day, 12mo 1779, 4 Feb 1779) support this, listing these 9 children when Joseph requests a certificate for Hopewell MM in Virginia.

Deborah and Joseph lived in Chester County until about 1774 or 1775. At that time, Joseph received a patent for a tract of land on the Monongahela River in what is now Washington County, Pennsylvania. That tract was named 'Allenton.' On 31 Aug 1784, he received a patent for another tract of 354 acres which he named 'Allen's Delight.' The town of Allenport and Allen Township both received his name. Allenport was located on his farm.

On 28 Mar 1799, Joseph divided his accumulated lands of over 800 acres amongst his children, excluding his homestead and farm where he lived until his death.

He also donated the land for Mount Tabor Cemetery, that sits on a very high hill over looking the Monongahela River, Fayette City and Allenport. It is reported that 3 generations of Allens are buried there including his first wife, Deborah.

Joseph married Hannah (Young) Burson, a widow, on 31 Dec 1800. He was approximately 67 and she was about 47. The exact date of Joseph's death is not known, but his will was probated on 30 Dec 1816. Hannah died in about 1810.
