Ewald Stein, prominent citizen, dead at 85
Prominent Wickenburg civic leader, businessman and historian Ewald A. Stein died Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City.
Services were Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg, with Pastor Bruce McQueen officiating.
Mr. Stein, 85, had lived in Wickenburg for 55 years and was one of the community's most active citizens, both in civic and business affairs.
He had moved to Sun City in August.
He was born Oct. 25, 1902 in Juneau, Wisc., and attended school in Bay City, Mich.
He moved to Wickenburg in 1932 and later started the "Out Wickenburg Way" theater, which he operated until 1947.
Mr. Stein was long active in Wickenburg civic matters and was a founding and charter member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club in 1938. He served as the club's president and was also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a founding and charter member of the Wickenburg Roundup Club, which later became the Chamber of Commerce, and served as president of that organization.
In addition, he was a founding member and first president of the Community Hospital Association of Wickenburg, founder and first president of the Rural Wickenburg Landowners Association, and was also active in the Wickenburg Camera Club and the Wickenburg CB Club.
An avid photographer and writer, Mr. Stein did an Arizona travelogue with which he toured the state, and also contributed pictures and articles to Arizona Highways magazine. He authored a booklet, Legend of the Hassayampa.
On behalf of the Central Arizona Project Association, he created and toured the state with a slide show encouraging early efforts to build that project; he also did public relations work for International Harvester and did a movie on behalf of Arizona Boys Ranch, and served on the board of directors of that organization.
Mr. Stein began the Our America Foundation, for which he made a movie celebrating the 1976 Bicentennial. He toured with the movie, which was distributed nationally.
He served as Traffic Safety Coordinator for Gov. Paul Fannin, and continued in the Arizona traffic safety office until his retirement.
He was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg, and served as its choir director for many years. He also installed the church's sound system and operated it for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Sun City; a stepson, Jack Harrel of Yorba Linda, Calif.; sisters Malve Arnett of Wickenburg and Arlen Johnson of Port Huron, Mich.; a brother, Wesley Stein of Gross Pointe Woods, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Stein of Midland, Mich.; eight nieces and nephews; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
