Edward Burns Caulkins Jr. '32
After an extended period of declining health, Ed Caulkins died in Hobe Sound, Fla., on Nov. 18, 1989. He prepared at St. Mark's School, and at college was a member of the Ivy Club. Ed was an extremely popular member of our Class, and it was a disappointment to his many friends that he decided to leave before graduation and go to work. He later said: "One of my greatest mistakes was to resign during junior year, and I wonder how many times since then I have tried to persuade younger friends from doing this very thing."
An early job took Ed to New York and into the travel business, which he left to serve in the Training Command of the Army Air Forces. He was discharged a major in 1946, ran a small construction company in Detroit for several years, then, in 1951, joined the National Bank of Detroit. He retired as a vice president in 1970. Through much of his life he lived in Grosse Pointe, Mich., but after retirement, lived increasingly in Florida. He was a member of the Princeton Club, the Country Club and the Yondoteda Club, all of Detroit, and of the Jupiter Island Club in Florida.
Ed was married twice, first to the former Elsie McMillan, by whom he had two daughters, Bliss Caulkins Clark and Elsie Caulkins Childs. In 1975 he married the former Virginia Backus. She survives, as do his daughters, three grandsons, and a brother, Dan Platt Caulkins '26. We extend deepest sympathy to all of them in their loss.
