Rhoda's parents were William Sampson and Sarah Coleman.
Her father William was born on September 15, 1761 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He served as a private in the American Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a private with the Virginia troops in 1779. In early April 1781 he served two months in Capt. Fisher Price's Company under the command of Col. Taylor. He also served two months in Captain Waillard's Company, in Capt. Slaughter's regiment and participated in the battle of Petersburg, Virginia. He also served for four months in Capt. Elijah Kutleye's Company as part of Col. Dicks' Regiment.
Her mother Sarah Coleman was born in 1764 in Virginia. She and William Sampson were married in Culpeper Co. Virginia on November 10, 1784.
In 1805 the Sampsons moved from Kentucky to Harrison Co., Indiana.
William was a school teacher and later was a Justice of the Peace for sixteen years.
Rhoda's mother known as Sally died on July 9, 1833 and her father died of cholera a little over a month later on August 14th. Both parents were buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Lanesville, Floyd Co., Indiana.
People who can trace their ancestry back to William are eligible to become members of The Society of Indiana Pioneers.
Rhoda was called to testify at the trial of Noah Beauchamp for murdering his neighbor George Mickelberry to verify that Mrs. Mickelberry had changed her story.
