Calvin Purvis, an Ashley County resident for the past 20 years, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock. Born in Prentiss, MS, to Edgar Middleton Purvis and Mary Flora Pauline Ball, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served two tours in the Vietnam War and one tour in Italy before retiring from the U. S. Navy after 20 years of service. He and his family then moved to Ashley County. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph Doyle of Eudora and Edgar Owen of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister, Lillian Chestenia "Judy" Bailey of Memphis, TN.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine Purvis of Crossett; a son, Glenn Purvis of Crossett; a brother, Otis B. Purvis of Homa, LA; a sister, Carolyn Farrow of Summit, Utah; and three granddaughters.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
