Religious leader. Cincinnati-based Baptist minister who helped organize the 2.5 million-member Progressive National Baptist convention and is widely regarded as visionary with the perseverance to get tough jobs done. In 1961, it was Booth and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who founded the Progressive National Baptist Convention. It split from the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc. and formed a denomination that would play a more active role in the civil rights movement by linking with groups such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and providing Dr. King a national platform. Booth was the denominations president from 1971 to 1974. He also was the pastor of Cincinnati's Zion Baptist Church for three decades and was the first African-American on the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees (1968), where he served until 1989.
